Dirty Rice. I like it rather mild like Bojangles and I absolutely will not eat it made of chicken livers or gizzards, even though I have found several recipes that say Bojangles uses gizzards. Um, no, it's sausage.

Anyhow, if you've got Dirty Rice recipes, post 'em!

Alexcat requested a Dirty Rice Recipe...

This is not my recipe; I grabbed it off the web. But I have made it several times and love it. No gizzards or livers. Yuck!

12 ounces pork sausage with sage
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup finely diced onion
1/4 cup finely diced celery
1/2 green bell pepper, finely diced
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 (6-ounce) package original long grain and wild rice, with seasoning packet
2 1/3 cups low sodium chicken broth

In a 10-inch frying pan over medium-high heat, brown the sausage, breaking up the meat with a fork into little pieces. Drain the grease, remove sausage to a bowl, and set aside.

Add the olive oil to the frying pan over medium heat. When oil is hot add the onion, celery, and bell pepper. Cook until vegetables are soft, but not brown, about 3 to 5 minutes.
Return the sausage to the pan, add poultry seasoning and stir to combine. Add rice and seasoning packet and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add chicken broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, covered tightly, for 25 minutes.

I've made this a few times. Yum!

Ingredients:
1 cup frozen unsweetened strawberries
1/2 cup frozen unsweetened blueberries
1/2 tsp. Crystal Light Classic Orange Sunrise powdered drink mix (half an On The Go packet or 1/8th of a tub)
1 no-calorie sweetener packet

Directions:
Place frozen fruit in the blender and allow it to thaw slightly (about a minute or two). Meanwhile, dissolve powdered drink mix and sweetener in 10 oz. of cold water. Stir well, and then pour drink mixture over the fruit in the blender. Blend at medium-high speed until thoroughly mixed. If blending slows, stop blender, stir mixture, and blend again. Pour into a tall glass and enjoy! MAKES 1 SERVING

I'm not a fan of gizzards of any sort either. Just...eww. I also sometimes am pressed for time so using the prepackaged rice mix helps me out tons. This is a recipe I had found and added to my collection a while ago.

1 pound lean ground beef
1 pound pork sausage (I use mild sage)
1 onion, finely diced
1 clove minced garlic
1 (8 ounce) package dirty rice mix of choice
2 cups water
1 (10 ounce) can Ro-Tel (diced tomatoes with green chile peppers)
2 (15 ounce) cans kidney beans, rinsed and drained (I'm not a fan of kidney beans and used pintos myself)
salt and pepper to taste

In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, sausage, garlic and onion; drain.
In a large pan, combine rice mix and 2 cups water. Add Ro-Tel (diced tomatoes and chilies). Stir in the beans. Bring to a boil, then add meat mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Return to boil, reduce heat, and cover, stirring occasionally. Cook for 25 minutes, until rice is easily fluffed with a fork.
